Building automation senior programmer. I’ve been with Colorado Controls for over 7 years.

IN YOUR CURRENT POSITION, WHAT DOES YOUR DAY-TO-DAY LOOK LIKE?

If not going directly to a jobsite, coming to the office, checking my schedule, preparing for new jobs like reading the sequence of operations and making notes, pre-programing any new controllers, commissioning, performing online service calls, service technicians online support and performing owner training.

BEFORE WORKING AT COLORADO CONTROLS, WHAT WAS THE MOST INTERESTING JOB YOU’VE EVER HAD?

I was a field engineer for 400 bed hospital project.

IF YOU HAD TO CHOOSE ANOTHER CAREER, WHAT WOULD IT BE AND WHY?

Fixing things is my passion so if I had to choose another career, it would be an auto mechanic.

I’m lucky to have very loving and intelligent family, my wife Shaimaa has a PhD in agriculture and works for USDA, my son Hassan is a seventh grader and he is showing a great programing talent.

I moved to Colorado in 2014 and I’m fascinated with the mountains.

WHAT DOES YOUR JOB LOOK LIKE DAY-TO-DAY? CAN YOU DESCRIBE A BIT ABOUT WHAT YOU DO?

I generally check my emails first to see if there is anything that needs addressed or my attention immediately, secondly, no job for me is ever the same when it comes to engineering and design, with that being said, I stay busy full-time engineering and doing the control drawings for various types of projects ranging anywhere from a single-story office building, to a multi-story office building, schools-new and retrofit, assisted living centers, and large warehouses, are just few of the types of projects that we do.

WHAT HAVE YOU GAINED FROM WORKING AT COLORADO CONTROLS?

I believe that I have brought to the table many of the talents that I have gained from over the 20 years of experience that I came with. Examples of that would be, engineering & design, HVAC equipment experience, various manufacturers product knowledge of temperature controls from electric, to electronic, pneumatic and DDC control, purchasing, and from time-to-time project management as needed.

TELL ME A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR FAMILY!

We are a small family, and we pretty much keep to ourselves and live simple lives. We are pretty much private and maintain our boundaries between work and our private lives and just try and take care of ourselves and our family.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED IN COLORADO AND WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT IT?

I moved here to Colorado from Springfield Illinois on August 29th, 1979 when I was twenty one so that would make living here in Colorado 42 years now and I feel pretty much as if I am a native to Colorado.

WHAT KINDS OF HOBBIES AND INTERESTS DO YOU HAVE OUTSIDE OF WORK?

I enjoy music and playing the drums. I was in a band here in Colorado from 1984-1985 named Patchwork and we played top 100 music. We played many private venues, wedding receptions, a Christmas party for the Safeway Credit Union, and yes, we even played the bar scene. I am very big into NHRA drag racing, fishing, bowling, building custom computers and roller skating. I was very big into roller skating in my younger years and was a speed skater and did some freestyle skating too.

WHERE IS THE BEST PLACE YOU’VE TRAVELED TO AND WHY?

I would have to say Cancun was one of the nicest places I have been to for vacation and next I would say San Diego, CA. would be the next.

PEOPLE WOULD BE SURPRISED IF THEY KNEW:

In my past while growing up I had the opportunity to work under seven great chefs and that I had the privilege of learning how to prepare and cook many types of gourmet types of dishes from lobster thermidor to chateaubriand, and I have worked many breakfasts, brunches, lunches, dinners, banquets, and buffets.

WHAT IS THE WEIRDEST JOB YOU’VE EVER HAD?

I do not know about the weirdest job I have ever had, but I was a roller-skating floor guard for around three years or so during my sophomore through senior years while in high school and for about a year afterwards after I had graduated from high school.

WHAT IS YOUR TITLE AND WHAT ARE YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES WITH COLORADO CONTROLS?

I am the lead graphic designer at Colorado Controls, so I am responsible for designing and creating the user interface for building automation systems. I work with our programmers and installers to accurately represent the system on an online format that building operators can utilize to control and monitor their spaces.

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR INTERESTS OUTSIDE OF WORK?

I love being outside more than anything! If I could be outside 24/7 I would be. I like to bike, hike, camp, rock climb, and paddle. I really love listening and playing music, so I enjoy going to live concerts. When I’m stuck inside I like reading, watching tv, playing piano, and cooking.

WHAT WOULD PEOPLE BE SURPRISED TO FIND OUT ABOUT YOU?

I worked at a summer camp in New Mexico for four different summers and one summer I was a blacksmith who also gave tours of a mine and performed a musical concert every night!

WHAT IS A “BUCKET LIST” DESTINATION YOU WOULD LIKE TO TRAVEL TO AND WHY?

I really would love to go to Australia and spend a month there – it has such a wide variety of things to do and looks insanely beautiful!

WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED THE MOST WHILE WORKING AT COLORADO CONTROLS?

I’ve really had to learn to go with the flow. Technology in our field and construction in general is constantly changing and schedules are constantly in flux, so learning how to be more flexible and go with the flow has been a huge help.

TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR FAMILY?

I am number 2 out of 4! I am really close with my family even though they all still live in Nebraska. My friends and boyfriend are my chosen family in Colorado. 😊

IF YOU WERE NOT WORKING WITH COLORADO CONTROLS WHAT WOULD YOU BE DOING?

I’d probably be working outside somehow. I’d love a job where I can be outside in the sunshine as much as possible – maybe working at a national park or an organic farm.

The Golden Enclaves by Naomi Novik – somehow my sister has gotten me into reading fantasy which is new for me.

Trapper Mine. It is a coal mine in Craig Colorado, we installed controls on a new wash and maintenance bay for the heavy equipment owned by the mine. The oversized building and equipment at Trapper Mine was a sight to see

I have worked as an installer for Colorado Controls for 3 years.

BEFORE WORKING AT COLORADO CONTROLS, WHAT WAS THE MOST INTERESTING JOB YOU’VE EVER HAD?

The most interesting job I have ever had was finishing hardwood floors. I love how forgiving wood is, and how creative you can be when custom blending stains.

IF YOU HAD TO CHOOSE ANOTHER CAREER, WHAT WOULD IT BE AND WHY?

I would work for the US Forest Service because I love being outdoors.

I have a large family spread out all over the States and even some on the other side of the world! I have 5 sisters and 4 brothers. I have two kids, both sons, and we love to camp, fish, hike, and play hard!

I have lived in Colorado for 20 years. My favorite thing about living here is being able to explore the mountains!

I have my master electrical license. I've done multiple jobs from lighting retrofits, electrical jobs to temperature controls.

WHAT IS THE MOST UNUSUAL ASPECT OF WORKING HERE?

I love what I do and most days I just look forward to doing my job. However in the rare times I need motivating God is my strength and motivation and also my kids!

WHEN YOU ARE AT WORK, HOW DO YOU MOTIVATE YOURSELF?

I think the most unusual aspect of working here is the broad spectrum of work we do. I've crimped CAT V RJ-45, temperature controls and electrical.

WHAT WOULD A PERFECT DAY LOOK LIKE TO YOU? WHAT WOULD YOU DO?

A prefect day to me is time spent with my kids tubing in the snow or a water park in the summer!

Being a System Specialist I am consistently doing a wide range of tasks that are never repetitive in nature which I highly enjoy. You could say that I am a puzzle solver when it comes to troubleshooting issues with BAS.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT THE WORK WE DO HERE?

I enjoy not just one thing in particular, I enjoy the camaraderie, the opportunity to learn, the opportunity to meet new people and the opportunity to assist clients with resolving their issues.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO IN YOUR FREE TIME? WHAT IS YOUR FAMILY LIKE?

I enjoy spending time with my wife and our family no matter if its taking a motorcylcle ride into the mountains, taking a trip out of state for a gathering or going out for a nice dinner we always have plenty of opportunities to enjoy time off.

Possibly a Pilot but I always wanted to keep my doors open to see what I thought to be fitting with what I enjoyed.

I started out in my early 20's being an electrician then moved into Industrial Automation learning relay logic.

I was on the news in TX when I was in highschool and I was on PBS with my Intern in 2016 that was part of the Colorado Apprenticeship Program for Automation under Governor Hickenlooper while employed at Mikron.

With nearly forty years' commercial and industrial HVAC experience, and thirty years growing up in the controls and automation industry, I'm proud to have built Teams and Careers for dozens of successful younger men and their families. Today, I'm privileged to be able to utilize those experiences here, and love the challenge of a growing enterprise, as both designer and student.

Where is one place you'd like to visit and why?

Cork, Ireland. As land of my heritage, I've never had the opportunity to tour and get to know where my family originated.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE ASPECT OF YOUR CURRENT ROLE?

Challenge, and the opportunities to continue learning. When the learning stops, the ability to give back also slows. I absolutely enjoy giving back.

HOW DO YOU TAKE YOUR COFFEE?

Black. Never mess with perfection.

HOW DO YOU DEFINE SUCCESS?

Family and relationships. It's really that simple.

I enjoy history. I can binge on history documentaries, if rest permits. I also enjoy long-range recreational shooting, and camping.

Currently? I'm watching myself reading what I just wrote… However, again, I enjoy history.

I'd begun to go into early retirement. Realizing that just wasn't for me, and that I still had more to learn and more to give, I was given the gift of opportunity to re-enter the workforce with a Group I really enjoy.

WHERE IS YOUR FAVORITE DESTINATION YOU'VE EVER VISITED AND WHY?

Right here at home, where I was born and grew up -- Estes Park, the Big Thompson Canyon, and the upper National Parks.

Assist with preparing job start up/closeout docs, including contracts, insurance, change orders, warranty letters, etc. Ordering Materials; Project billing, tracking and reporting. Assist in coordinatation of service calls, billing and reporting.

I worked for a couple of general contractors in the Denver area before moving up to Fort Collins for this job.

WHAT IS ONE THING YOU WISH PEOPLE KNEW ABOUT YOUR JOB?

I just wish more people knew about controls and building automation. It usually takes a little bit more explanation when when telling someone what I do.

WHAT DO YOU FIND MOST REWARDING IN YOUR CURRENT ROLE?

I love problem solving and I love how I am continually learning new things.

WHAT IS YOUR FAMILY LIKE? WHAT DO YOU DO IN YOUR FREE TIME?

My family is a lot of fun. Get togethers usually involve some sort of game which typically ends in spirited, but friendly debates. My wife and I love to get outdoors; Hiking, biking and skiing.

WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE AFTERNOON SNACK?

Some variation of trail mix. I love the sweet and salty combo.

Indie Folk/Indie Rock; Usually listent to music at work or long drives and I find the music to be relaxing.

Professional baseball player, but I knew pretty early on that was never going to happen.

TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR ROLE AT COLORADO CONTROLS

I started with this company mainly doing led lighting retrofits. As I have grown with the company now I bounce between lighting and the the controls jobs, helping in anyway I can.

WHAT'S SOMETHING YOU WANT TO ACCOMPLISH IN YOUR CAREER?

My goal for this year is to try and test out for my masters electrician license, plus growing my knowledge in the controls department.

WHEN YOU ARE AT WORK, HOW DO YOU MOTIVATE YOURSELF?

I love making a punch list for daily activities needing done on the job. A punch list is, hot items or areas that need work done. I always chose the hardest things to start with first. That way when you crossing off the list it gives you a sense of accomplishment and the further you get in your day the easier your tasks get.

WHAT'S SOMETHING YOU'RE PROUD OF IN YOUR CAREER THUS FAR?

My 2 biggest accomplishments would be testing out and passing for my Journeyman electrical license. The next accomplishment blwould be passing the tech 1 and 2 yesterday for Reliable Controls.

TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOUR FAMILY!

I am a proud father of an 8 year old boy Easton and a 2 year old boy Jensen. I'm not married but me and Amanda(significant other) have been together over 18 years.

WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST PET PEEVE?

Tardiness is a huge issue that I have problems with. We are all human and not perfect. So I get when it happens every once in awhile but if you are doing it regularly it's a problem.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO ON THE WEEKENDS?

Love going camping with the family. Also wrenching on cars or atvs. Or anything I can take the kids too whether it be the park or certain events through out the year where they can have Fun.

WHAT DID YOU DO BEFORE YOU STARTED WORKING AT COLORADO CONTROLS?

I was a Journeyman lead man on bigger electrical project. Usually running crews of about 10 guys.

WHAT IS ONE THING YOU CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT?

I can't live without the hobby of playing pool(billiards). I am in local leagues and also play in yearly state tournaments.

IF YOU WERE OFFERED YOUR DREAM JOB TOMORROW, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

As of right now I don't know what my ideal job would be. I love working for Colorado Controls and feel they have been the best company I have been with, over the other contractors I have worked for. So I'd love to see how I can help this company grow and move up in this department.

I am officially the Controls Coordinator. I schedule all active Preventative Maintenance visits, random service calls and jobs.

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN THIS INDUSTRY?

I got started in this industry by applying for a job. HaHa - I spent 24 years in the Automation Industry and it was time for a change.

WHAT IS THE MOST UNUSUAL ASPECT OF WORKING HERE?

It is not unusual but rare. This is an office that feels like family. Everyone helps each other with no questions asked to help attain the end goal of each project.

I have a husband and 3 boys who are 21,16, 14 all with completely different personalities. As a family we like boating, spending time at the lake, spending time at the farm, hunting, gardening, cooking and cheering on the Huskers!!

When I was really little I loved to argue with everyone and thought I would make a great Lawyer. When I got a little older I wanted to travel, put together lavish events and thought being a Cruise Director would be fun. But when I got to college, all the years of building things with legos won out and I decided on Engineering.

Peaceful quietness of coffee time! It’s the one time during the day when everyone in the house is still asleep and there are no loud voices.

Fresh cracked Crab with butter and lets be real, who can say no to a Double Cheeseburger from McDonalds.

I am currently an apprentice installer learning the ways of the trade involving low voltage electrical work for smart building automation

WHAT DID YOU DO BEFORE YOU STARTED WORKING AT COLORADO CONTROLS?

Before working here i worked at an automotive repair shop in high school and when i turned 18 i became a tinner doing hvac for 2 years then transitioned over to controls

IF YOU WERE GIVEN YOUR DREAM JOB TOMORROW, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

My dream job would be some sort of motorsports racing

WHAT DO YOU DO IN YOUR FREE TIME? WHAT IS YOUR FAMILY LIKE?

I do alot of mountain bikin, dirt biking and camping in the summers and snowboarding in the winter

WHAT MOTIVATES YOU TO GET OUT OF BED IN THE MORNINGS?

Wanting to give my girfriend and future family the life they deserve

SWEET OR SALTY FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE AND WHY?

I'd have to go with salty because its alot harder to get burnt out on and has more variety than sweet

If i had to pick one meal it would proabley be a bacon cheese burger with fries.

The visual satisfaction after wiring something up and it looks all neat and tidy also learning new things and being able to do it the first time on your own

WHAT IS THE MOST UNUSUAL ASPECT OF WORKING HERE?

How everyone gets along and works well with each other.

WHEN YOU ARE AT WORK, HOW DO YOU MOTIVATE YOURSELF?

Listening to Christian rap or listening to a sermon.

WHAT WOULD A PERFECT DAY LOOK LIKE TO YOU? WHAT WOULD YOU DO?

Outside of work I would normally just be out in the woods or in the eastern plains hunting.

At work it would either be on a Lighting retrofit or just being an electrician.

My family comes from a long line of farmers and ranchers, We normally talk about the farm and how it is doing, or we spend time reading the Bible and listening to sermons on our free time.

We operate like a family and are genuinely good people.

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN THIS INDUSTRY?

I went to trade school in Kansas to become an electrician & get the proper skill set to become an apprentice.

WHAT'S ONE THING PEOPLE DON'T KNOW ABOUT YOU THAT THEY'D BE SURPRISED TO FIND OUT?

I struggled in Middle School & High School, but maintained a 4.0 GPA at my trade school.

WHAT DO YOU FIND MOST REWARDING IN YOUR CURRENT ROLE?

The vast amount of knowledge that I have learned from our staff.

Movie wise it would be God's Not Dead. Tv show The Chosen.

When I was little I wanted to be a sportscaster or sports announcer.

I started working at Eaton right out of high school wiring panels and I have had an interest in electrical ever since.

I don't drink coffee

I'm a really good cook.

Weld County School District

Tointon Academy of Pre-Engineering - Included over 150 Reliable Controls installed devices.

S. Christa McAuliffe S.T.E.M. Academy - S. Christa McAuliffe S.T.E.M. Academy was a partial retrofit, partial new construction that we completed in 2021 where we installed new unit ventilators in many classroms and new RTUs in common spaces.

Brentwood Middle School - Brentwood Middle School was a retrofit we were also able to complete with updated equipment as well as updated programming and graphics.

Windsor Town Hall

After a successful design, installation, and engineering of the existing systems, the building is now a perfect example of a well-done retrofit. Using our knowledge of the industry and following historical standards, we have a wonderful example of old and new working together. It also serves to show that we can breathe new life into an older building using correct methodology, while also saving the customers money. The people directly involved with renovating Windsor Town Hall are all extremely proud of the work we did and look forward to an ongoing relationship with the Town of Windsor as we update their systems.

Colorado Early College (CEC) Colorado Springs

Colorado Early Colleges has been a client of ours for quite some time now and we most recently have completed another project for them, this time in Colorado Springs. CEC Springs Building 100 has been retrofitted to house several remodeled classrooms and a brand new commercial kitchen. We programmed and created graphics for 31 Rooftop Units of which there were 17 variations. Along with the RTU programming we also added a multi-thermostat voting system for several of the units.
